In a project geared towards exploring Open Source Software I decided to explore not just one program, but many in order to explore how useful they could be for education. In this document I outline 18 Open Source Programs and explore their potential in the classroom. I also discus why portable applications are beneficial in the classroom and compare them to their installed and cloud-based alternatives. This is a great read for anyone looking for free programs to implement in the classroom and anyone wanting software that can be used at school as well as at home. With portable applications students are able to travel from computer to computer with their files and programs. Though the content is geared specifically to technology teachers, many of the programs are useful in common core classes as well.
